HYDERABAD, Jan 29:The National Reconstruction Bureau has withheld the payment of share of octroi tax to old (rural) union councils, the district council was informed by its chief whip, Miran Mohammad Shah, on Thursday.

Mr Shah said DCO Mohammad Hussain Syed, had shown him a letter of the NRB, requiring the district government not to pay the share of octroi tax to the UCs. He said the DCO had promised to make the payment of Rs21,000 per month to the UCs and he had left for Karachi today to meet the additional chief secretary, local government, in this regard.

The members of the district council had been protesting in and outside the council for the last four days against non-payment of their share from the octroi and district tax for the last several years.

CUSTOMS DAY: The International Customs Day was observed at the collectorate of customs, sales tax and central excise here the other day by the staff, reports our Bureau.

The senior officers of the department explained the importance of the international customs day and urged the staff to perform their duties diligently and honestly. A large quantity of narcotics seized by the customs officials was torched.
