SUKKUR, Jan 26: An urgent meeting of the Sukkur Atta Chakki Association, chaired by its president, Jalal Khan Narewal, was held here on Monday. According to a press release, the meeting said that flour shortage was once again prevailing in the area as the food department had issued little wheat to the Chakki owners this month.
The meeting decided to go on hunger strike if the food department did not issue the regular wheat quota immediately. They also demanded that the chief minister should intervene in the matter to contain the situation.
JUI RALLY: Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-F activists took out a procession here on Monday to protest against the detention of Pakistani nuclear scientists.The rally started from Manzil Gah mosque and terminated at the local press club.
Besides raising slogans against the US and the government, the protesters also burnt the US flag. Speaking to the rally, local leaders accused the government of acting on the behest of the US, and therefore, disgracing not only the scientists but the whole nation.
Calling Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan and other scientists national heroes, the leaders demanded their immediate release. They warned that in case the government failed to comply, the JUI-F would launch a country-wide agitation.
ANTI-BANDIT CAMPAIGN: Arrangements are under way to launch an extensive operation against bandits in the district for which a grant of Rs40 million has been sought from the Sindh government.
Police sources told this correspondent on Saturday that in this connection Deputy Inspector-General of Police Ramzan Channa and DPO Shabbir Shaikh inspected the entire area of Shah Belo and Bagarji Belo along the Indus river.
They said the aim of the operation was to release the hostages and demolish the hideouts of the bandits. The police established more than 20 pickets along the protective bund.
