NAROWAL: Narowal lawyers end strike

NAROWAL, Jan 20: Lawyers here ended their boycott of the court of district and sessions judge Sheikh Muhammad Tareef on Tuesday on his assurance of cooperation regarding Jan 17 incident.

The District Bar Association, in a meeting on Monday, had unanimously decided to boycott the court of district and sessions judge because he had refused to side with lawyers in the rift between the judiciary and police.

The lawyers stayed away from the courts on Tuesday as other judges, in a show of solidarity with the bar, did not attend their offices. The lawyers observed a full day's strike on Monday to condemn the act of police officers and to express their solidarity with the judiciary.

Meanwhile, Punjab Auqaf Minister Syed Saeedul Hasan also visited Narowal on Monday on the instructions of chief minister to settle the dispute between the police and the judiciary.

He held a meeting with the SSP in his office. However, the details of the meeting were not made public. Later, the minister told newsmen that judiciary and police were two important pillars of the state. Confrontation between them would only benefit the criminals and the poor people would suffer.

Narowal Headquarters DSP Nawaz, along with a heavy contingent of police forcibly entered the court of civil judge Ghulam Shabbir Husain Gill on Jan 17 to secure the release of Zafarwal police SHO Mailk Ghulam Abid who was arrested for contempt of court. However, the court staff and lawyers foiled their bid.
