Raheela helps Wapda to bag honours

LAHORE, Jan 18: Fast pedalling Raheela Bano helped Wapda win the second National Women cycling championships with 179 points at the National Velodrome on Sunday.

Raheela single-handedly claimed 75 points to be adjudged the best cyclist of the three-day event and raised Wapda's cumulative points to 179, which in the end earned it the title.

With 128 points Army made it to second position followed by Railways 56, Punjab 27, Balochistan 12 and NWFP six. The day saw four competitions in the team's event, the golds of two of which were grabbed by Army while one went to Wapda. Punjab won the remaining gold.

The Army team (Aneela Ayub, Bushra Hayat, Uzma Malik) laid hands on the first gold of the day in the Team Sprint, clocking one minute36.45 seconds.

The Wapda team (Ghazala Abbas, Ayesha Amin, Raheela Bano), took the second position while the Railways (Saira, Fauzia, Ayesha) finished third. In the Three Kilometre Team Pursuit, Army left Wapda and Railways behind.

Raheela won the lone individual event of the day when she clocked 15.56 seconds to win the 1000m Individual Sprint race. Bushra Hayat (Army) and Ayesha Amin (Wapda) came secondand third, respectively.

Razia Malik of Punjab won the Inter-provincial 2000m race in which Atifa Zafar (Balochistan) and Ayesha (NWFP) could manage second and third.
