Army humiliate PEB as Hassan grabs hat trick

By Our Sports Reporter

KARACHI, Jan 17: Hassan Arfi's quickfire hat trick helped Pakistan Army humiliate Pakistan Education Board (PEB) 13-1 in the Under-20 national hockey championship on Saturday.

Hapless PEB were stunned when Hassan struck thrice in a row in the opening 11 minutes of the game at Hockey Club of Pakistan where three more matches were played.

Hassan drew first blood in the eighth minute, then converted a penalty corner two minutes later before completing his hat trick in the 11th minute to send Army 3-0 up.

Soldiers marched on to make it 7-0 before going for the lemons as Mubashir Ali netted the fourth in the 13th minute, while Abdul Ghafoor slammed home three minutes later.

Munir Ahmad's 29th-minute effort was followed by second Ghafoor goal four minutes before halftime hooter.

Yet there was no respite for PEB as soldiers went on rampage scoring six more goals. Two-goal Mohammad Afzal slotted home his first in the 40th minute and Mubashir poached his second three minutes later.

A 52nd-minute goal by Faizan was the only consolation PEB had.

Army fired a salvo of two goals within span of three minutes, Khalid Mahmood finding the target in 53rd minute and Mohammad Arshad netting on 56 minute.

Arshad netted his second in the 60th, while Afzal his second in the 66th minute to complete PEB's punishment.

KESC, who have become one of the strongest sides of the tournament after including five "outsiders", registered a comfortable 3-0 victory over Punjab Blues.

Rizwan Khan opened the account in the 16th minute to give KESC a slim 1-0 advantage before breather.

Skipper Imran Ali doubled the lead in the 43rd minute and Noman Zakir sealed the fate of the match by scoring the third in the 60th minute.

Three-goal Saeed Shah enabled NWFP Colours crush Sindh Whites by a tennis score of 6-1.

The visitors had an upper hand over their rivals and got off to a flying start with a Zahid Malik goal in the fourth minute of the first half.

A solitary goal by Atif Ali was the only achievement of the local side who remained at the receiving end almost throughout the game, especially in the second half.

NWFP Colours started the second session with an Abdul Samad goal in the opening seconds. Saeed netted his first in the 42nd minute to make it 3-1.

The tour party came near scoring but a deflection by Zeeshan off a Zahid cross from left missed the target.

Ehsanullah's 46th-minute raid was followed by the second Saeed goal four minutes later while he scored his third in the 59th minute to complete the tally.

In a one-sided affair, POF pulverised Sindh Blues 16-0.

Sunday's fixtures: Punjab Blues v Islamabad at 8.30am at UBL; NWFP Colours v Northern Area at 10.15am at UBL; AJ&K v POF at 12.00am at UBL; NBP v NWFP Whites at 8.00 at HCP; Balochistan Whites v Railways 9.45am at HCP; Sindh Colours v Punjab Whites at 11.30am at HCP; Balochistan Colours v Army at 2.00pm at HCP; PTCL v Punjab Colours at 3.45pm at HCP.
