Davis Cup squad finalized

ISLAMABAD, Jan 17: Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) formally named its four players Saturday for the next month's away Davis Cup tie against Thailand.

Nomi Qamar and Jalil Khan, both from Karachi, got the nod for selection in the Pakistan squad on the conclusion of three-day trials at Karachi Gymkhana hard courts on Saturday.

Top-notchers Aisamul Haq Qureshi and Aqeel Khan were taken directly in the squad for the Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Zone, Group-1, tie against Thailand, to be played at Bangkok from Feb 6 to 8.

Former Pakistan No.1 Inamul Haq has been named the non-playing-captain for the trip to Bangkok.

Inam, an ex-Davis Cup star, conducted the three day trials competed by four players, including Shahzad Khan and Wasif Cheema who finished third and fourth respectively.

Following were the results of the three-day trial matches, comprising best-of-five sets:

Nomi Qamar bt Jalil Khan 6-2, 6-2, 6-0 (90 minutes). Shehzad Khan bt Wasif Cheema 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-3 (150 minutes).

Nomi Qamar bt Shehzad Khan 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, 3-6, 13-11 (3hours,45minutes), Jalil Khan bt Wasif Cheema 6-0, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 (two hours,30minutes). 17.1.03

Nomi Qamar bt Wasif Cheema 7-5, 6-0, 6-3 (two hours), Jalil Khan bt Shehzad Khan 7-6(4), 6-4, 7-5 (two hours,45minutes).
