ISLAMABAD, Jan 17: Feasibility report for 12 small dams will be completed shortly to be built in seven agencies of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata).

These sites have already been identified aimed at providing water storage facilities for the people of remote areas.

According to a senior official of the Ministry of Water and Power, the government had asked NWFP governor's secretariat to speed up work to finalize feasibility reports of the proposed dams.

Asian Development Bank (ADB) has given green signal for the provision of funds for a number of various projects including construction of these dams, an official told APP.

The ADB has shown interest in funding various projects for Fata and agreed to provide financial assistance for various small projects including dams for the first time.

A number of projects relating to water, communication, health and education would be included in the development programme of Fata.

The government has already awarded consultancy contract to National Engineering Services of Pakistan (Nespak) and hopefully consultancy work to be completed during the current financial year, he said.

The engineering section of the secretariat had identified 12 sites after completing ground survey in the seven agencies where small reservoirs would be constructed.

Under the multi-sectoral programme, new irrigation channels will be designed and funds will be provided by the government to improve the agriculture sector in the area, he said.

The construction of small reservoirs in tribal areas will benefit agriculture sector and control floods in catchment areas of rivers Kurram, Touchi and other small tributaries in Fata.
