KARACHI, Jan 14: An alleged bandit was shot dead and another wounded in what police described to be a shootout in Gulberg on Wednesday evening. Police said Tariq Rasheed was deprived of his mobile phone by armed motorcyclists near Gulberg Chowrangi.
Tariq informed the nearby police picket about the incident after which the police chased the bandits and ordered them to stop. Instead, the bandits opened fire on the police.
The police returned the fire which resulted in the death of a bandit while his accomplice suffered serious bullet wounds. The dead and the injured were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where the injured was identified as Naeem. The dead was identified as Zulfiqar. Both were in their early 30s, the hospital sources said, adding Naeem's condition was serious.
Following the incident, a number of youths came out of tuition centres located in the area, took to streets and pelted the moving vehicles with stones. They were under impression that the police had opened fire on innocent people.
Police reinforcement was called and the situation was brought under control subsequently. Advisor on home affairs Aftab Ahmed Shaikh reached the spot and reviewed the situation. He met the people and issued necessary directives.
Police claimed that two TT pistols and three stolen mobile phone sets were recovered from the possession of the alleged bandits. In other incidents, four persons were shot dead on Wednesday.
An elderly man was shot dead by unknown suspects in Moosa Colony early on Wednesday morning. Police said three suspects barged into the house of Daulat Ram, 70, and opened fire at him and escaped without taking any valuables.
Victim's son, Mohan Lal, lodged an FIR with the police against unknown persons. Police suspected personal enmity as a possible motive behind the killing.
In Mochko, Babar Mushtaq, 23, owner of a snooker club, was shot dead by a suspect in Gulshan-i-Ghazi on Wednesday.In Orangi Extention, a young man was killed during a dacoity late on Tuesday night.
Police said that armed suspects came to a PCO in Sector 11 1/2 of Orangi and started looting the people. As inmates tried to resist, the armed suspects opened fire and escaped.
One of the customers, Sajjad who had came to make a phone call was injured in the firing. The injured was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. However, area people got hold of the fleeing suspects and gave them a severe beating. Later, the suspects were handed over to the police. Police recovered two TT pistols from the suspects. They were identified as Mohammad Akram and Ahmed.
YOUNG MAN: A young man was shot dead by a suspect in Malir City police limits of Wednesday. Police said Maqsood Akhtar, 28, was shot dead by a suspect, Basit, who barged into his home in Dawood goth.
