LAHORE, Jan 10: The City District Government is continuing its campaign against profiteering since Ramazan without knowing the fate of 1,399 FIRs and 1,436 cases due to lack of feedback from the courts.
The results of such campaigns were known immediately during the pre-devolution period because deputy commissioners were the district magistrates as well and exercised control over all the executive magistrates.
The judicial magistrates entrusted with the trial of cases after devolution are under the control of the district and sessions judges and submit their performance reports to them instead of district governments. The results of the campaign remain unknown because the cases against profiteers are to be decided by the judicial magistrates who do not bother to give any feedback to the CDG.
Meanwhile, the CDG price checking teams recovered Rs1,248,650 fine from 666 profiteers during Ramazan besides lodging FIRs against 614. They arrested 10 meat and chicken sellers for under-weighing and submitted 1,172 cases against them. They also prosecuted four petrol pump managements for tampering with the meters.
They arrested 281 people for overcharging and lodged 504 FIRs against the profiteers after Ramazan. They arrested 96 chicken, meat and 'roti' sellers on various charges and handed them over to police besides submitting 260 cases in courts. They recovered Rs20,000 fine from 20 shopkeepers for overcharging and under-weighing during the period.
