KARACHI, Jan 10: A gathering at the Karachi Press Club on Saturday paid rich tributes to the late Aslam Sheikh, the well-known journalist and writer on economic issues and a staunch fighter for workers' rights.
Speakers recalled Aslam Sheikh's association with the APP, where he became director-general and also made a lot of improvement to the quality of APP reporting.
He was in the front ranks of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists when a countrywide campaign was launched against the late General Ziaul Haq in 1977 and 1978. He was convicted by a military court in Lahore and suffered imprisonment in the infamous Mianwali Jail.
Those who spoke on the occasion were Ahmad Ali Alavi, a former leader of APNEC, Ahfazur Rehman, PFUJ president, Mazhar Abbas, president of the KUJ, Qamarullah Chowdhry and Masood Sattar of the APP and Khurshid Abbasi and Sabihuddin Ghausi of the Karachi Press Club.
