KARACHI, Jan 9: The president, secretary and other office-bearers and members of the governing body of the Karachi Press Club have appealed to President General Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali to take notice of the moves being made by the Karachi Cantonment Board to commercialise plot 267 Sarwar Shaheed Road on which the KPC is housed.
An emergency meeting of the KPC governing body, held on Friday, unanimously resolved to convey to the government that the KPC members were opposed to commercialization of their premises.
The KPC has been functioning as a no-profit-no-loss club for the welfare of the journalists for the last 45 years and will continue to do so in the future. Like all other press clubs, the KPC also depends on government grants and private donations.
The governing body also drew the attention of the president and the prime minister to the fact that the ownership right of 267 Sarwar Shaheed Road was transferred to the KPC under an agreement signed on Aug 14, 1997.
They urged the president and the prime minister to intervene in the matter and stop the Karachi Cantonment Board from commercializing the said plot. The government, they said, should instruct the Karachi Cantonment Board to finalise the mutation deal in the name of the KPC. In case of any financial implication of this mutation, they pleaded, the Karachi Press Club be given a waiver.
