GUJRAT, Jan 8: A trader was picked up by a joint raiding team of police and intelligence agencies from his house in Fatupura here on Tuesday night allegedly for his involvement in the second blast attack on President Pervez Musharraf, it was learnt.

Sources told Dawn on the condition of anonymity that a police contingent of Rawalpindi Naseerabad Chowki led by an SI with the help of Gujrat Shahdaula Chowki police had arrested Abdul Shakoor (45) from his house after a raid. The police was assisting some men in plainclothes who were personnel of the intelligence agency, they said.

The trader, who runs a general store in the same locality, had been shifted to Joint Interrogation Centre in Rawalpindi, they said. Intelligence agencies had taped one of his suspicious phone calls and also took call data of his number from local telephone authorities, they claimed. The only son of parents, the trader is married and have four children and two sisters.

BIRTH ANNIVERSARY: The local PPP leadership during the last couple of days held different functions to mark the 76th birth anniversary of the party founder - the late Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.

The first function was held at the residence of PPP Gujrat city president Inam Elahi Butt where former MNA and district president Mian Mushtaq Pagganwala cut a cake to celebrate the birthday of the party founder.

Another function was held by Kharian Tehsil Nazim Chaudhry Nadeem Asghar Kaira at his outhouse in Lalamusa where the Kairas, including MNA Qamar Zaman Kaira, MPA Tanvir Ashraf Kaira and PPP district secretary-general Tahir Zaman Kaira paid rich tributes to the late Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.

The main function in this connection was held at the Dinga residence of Chaudhry Shamsher, a PPP nominee from PP-113 who is considered 'Raees of Dinga'. MNAs Chaudhry Qamar Zaman Kaira, Chaudhry Imtiaz Safdar, Maj Zulfiqar Ali Gondal (retired) and former MNA Mian Mushtaq Pagganwala also attended the function.

Speaking on the occasion, Qamar Kaira said that Jan 5 brought for him double happiness because he was also born on that day. He criticized the MMA leadership for striking a deal with the government over the issue of LFO and asked the MMA to disclose the amount of dollars against which they had changed their loyalties.

He said that his party would protect the 1973 Constitution.Imtiaz Safdar Warraich said that MMA leaders had betrayed the mandate given to them by the people. He said the religious parties who had earlier talked of principles had now entered into an agreement with the government on the pretext of upholding parliament.
