WASHINGTON, Jan 6: The United States said on Tuesday it expected President Pervez Musharraf to live up to its pledges to stop the spread of weapons of mass destruction, after new allegations linked Pakistani know-how to Libya's nuclear programme.

But White House spokesman Scott McClellan said following the reports in The New York Times the US officials recognised that "rogue" officials, acting outside the (Pakistani) government's scrutiny, could be hard to stop.

President Musharraf gave assurances to the US that Pakistan would not participate in the proliferation of designs and components useful to nations seeking nuclear weapons, following the Sept 11 attacks. "We fully expect President Musharraf and the government of Pakistan to follow through on those assurances," McClellan said. -AFP
