GILGIT, Jan 4: Christians are safer in the Northern Areas as they are fully enjoying equal rights in the region, the Christian community leaders said in Gilgit. They were speaking at a prayer service in the Catholic church in Konodas on Thursday on the eve of the New Year celebrations.

Northern Areas Home Secretary Saeed Ahmed, on the occasion said the government was providing all facilities to Christians in the region to perform their religious rituals and duties with complete freedom.

The local administration had already provided land to build a church and cemetery in Konodas. Many people belonging to various schools of thought, including women, were also present on the occasion.

A heavy contingent of police and paramilitary forces was deployed around the church premises to avoid any untoward incident. Konodas Church head Jameel Ayub lauded the chief guest and thanked the regional administration for extending all cooperation to his community.
