Maira wins battle of sisters

LAHORE, Jan 3: Fourth seed, Maira Rahim caused a major upset when she defeated her sister, top seed Nida, in a straight set final to clinch the girls U-18 title in the All-Pakistan junior ranking tennis championship at Punjab Coaching Centre, on Saturday.

Maira displayed her skills with strong backhand strokes winning easily 7-5, 6-4 .

Sara Mehboob, fourth seed, won the Under-14 final when she toppled Anoosha Aslam after a well contested three setfinal with the sore of 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.

The second seed Fahad Ali struggled to beat Imran Shoukat6- 7,6-4, 6-4 to enter the Boys' Under-14 final. He will meettop seed Ghulam Abbas in the final, who defeated Ali Sheikh 7-6, 6-0 in other prefinal.

Waqas Malik will meet Heera Ashiq in the final of the Under-12 singles. Waqas beat Muhammad Abid after facing tough time 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. Heera also earned a hard fought victory over Ghulam Abbas 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.

The pair of Wasif Cheema and Imran Rasool won the Boys Under- 18 doubles' final when they outplayed Tanveer Ashiq-Adnan Khan 7- 6, 6-1.

Finals of boys Under-18, Under-14 andUnder-12singles will be played on Sunday.

Boys singles U-14 (semifinals): Ghulam Abbas bt Ali Sheikh7-6, 6-0; Fahad Ali bt Imran Shoukat 6-7, 6-4,6-4.

Boys singles U-12 (semifinals): Waqas Malik bt MuhammadAbid 6-2, 4-6, 6-1; Heera Ashiq bt Ghulam Abbas 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.

Girls U-18 singles (final): Maira Rahim bt Nida Rahim 7-5, 6- 4.

Girls singles U-14 (final): Sara Mehboob bt Anoosha Aslam4- 6, 6-3, 6-0.
