KARACHI, Jan 2: The City Council Karachi on Thursday paid tributes to the services of Maulana Shah Ahmed Noorani, and demanded unanimously that the Northern Bypass or Lyrai Expressway be named after Maulana Shah Ahmed Noorani.

The session was chaired by Naib Nazim Tariq Hasan. Putting aside the agenda, including commercialization policy, lease rates for katchi abadies and some other matters, the session only discussed life and achievements of Maulana Noorani.

The members of the council paid rich tribute to Maulana Noorani for his achievements and contributions to Islam, democracy and supremacy of law in the country. Siddique Rathore, praising Maulana Noorani, said he was a national asset and the demise of the Maulana had deprived the Ummah of a scholar of high calibre.

"Maulana Noorani did a marvellous job by including Islamic provisions in the 1973 Constitution which declared Qadianis as non-Muslims, he maintained and attributed it a great service of the Maulana to the nation.

The council also passed a resolution condoling the death of 18 persons in a tragic accident at Port Qasim. They also expressed grief of deaths in earthquake in Iran.-PPI
