ISLAMABAD, Dec 31: Wapda successfully defended their Quaid-i- Azam Weightlifting crown on Wednesday with Shujauddin Malik bettering two of his own marks at the Pakistan Sports Complex.

Shuja's snatch of 146 kgs and total of 330 kgs were both new records in the 80 kgs category as Wapda collected two more golds on the last day to finish with 72 points. Railways were runners- up with 45 points followed by Police who had 30.

Shuja's previous best was snatch of 145 kgs and total of 327.5 kgs. On Wednesday he gave a splendid account of himself leaving the young and upcoming Khursheed Malik of Railways in second place and Haroon bin Rasheed of Police third.

Wapda who finished the championship with six gold, one silver and a bronze medal, won their second gold of the day in the 94 kgs category, Abad Ali taking top spot with a total of 315 kgs. Ghulam Fareed came in second with 285 kgs while Sohail Sarwar of Punjab was third, totalling 242.5 kgs.

Police picked up their only gold of the championship through Rashid Aqeel Aslam in the 105 kgs event, his total of 307.5 kgs leaving Haroon Asif of Railways and Punjab's Tanveer Butt behind.

Alam Din's total of 335 kgs was good enough to earn Balochistan their solitary gold of the championship in the plus 105 kgs category, the lifter winning what was his first national competition. Brothers Hanif Butt and Kashif Hanif of Railways were second and third respectively.
