MMA team meets Pervaiz

LAHORE, Dec 31: A delegation of MMA MPAs called on Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi here on Wednesday and reviewed the positive impact of the alliance's agreement with the government on the political situation in the country.

According to a handout, it was noted in the meeting that the government-MMA agreement reflected political tolerance and mutual understanding, and a result of which democratic process and institutions would be strengthened in the country.

The chief minister said the agreement had ended political uncertainty besides discouraging those political elements who were trying to hamper the democratic process at the behest of their leadership abroad. He said President Gen Pervez Musharraf had provided through this agreement that he preferred national and democratic interests over his personal interest.

He said the vote of confidence to the president would ensure the continuation of economic reforms in the country. The role of the MMA leadership in the agreement was also highly praiseworthy, he said.

The MMA MPAs appreciated the steps taken by the provincial government for providing missing facilities in the educational institutions and said that such steps would help achieve 100 per cent literacy rate in the province.

They also appreciated the step taken by the government for the provision of houses to government employees, presenting various suggestions regarding the improvement in the police system. They also demanded implementation of the ban on meals at wedding ceremonies.

PML-Q meeting: Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz has said that the assemblies would express their full confidence in the leadership of President Pervez Musharraf and give him the vote of confidence which was his right.

He was speaking at a meeting of the PML parliamentary party and its allies here on Wednesday night. The chief minister said the president had rendered innumerable services for the rule of law, reforms process and public welfare.

He urged the assembly members to play their role for the effective implementation of government programme for the promotion of education in their constituencies.

He said the political system had been further strengthened due to the agreement between the government and the MMA. Political stability could become a source of economic progress, he said. He said great importance was being given to the organizational matters of the PML which was a symbol of unity and solidarity.
