Fresh plea against Qadeer’s detention

By Our Correspondent

LAHORE, Dec 29: Advocate M D Tahir filed a fresh habeas corpus petition with the Lahore High Court on Monday for nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, seeking his production in court for recording his statement about incidents leading to his illegal confinement.

The petition was first filed last week and the office raised the objection that it was not accompanied with detention orders. The petitioner on Monday removed the objection by writing that no such orders usually accompanied with habeas corpus petitions.

The petitioner has stated on the basis of newspaper reports that Dr Qadeer was taken into illegal custody and was being interrogated. He submitted that the more deplorable aspect of the issue was that the US intelligence agency, FBI, was also part of the arrest and interrogation process.

He submitted that Dr Qadeer was the pride of all Pakistanis and was, instead of being rewarded for his exemplary service to Pakistan, being victimized.
