HYDERABAD, Dec 29: Writers and intellectuals paid tribute to renowned poet Shaikh Ayaz for his services in the cause of Sindh and literature at a function held at the Sindh Museum on Sunday night to observe his sixth anniversary.
The function was jointly organized by the Shaikh Ayaz Foundation and the Sindhi Adabi Sangat.
Speakers said Mr Ayaz was one of the greatest poets and his services to literature and Sindh could never be forgotten.
Noted intellectual and writer Ibrahim Joyo, who presided over the event, said the Sindhi nation was proud of the late Ayaz and had always acknowledged the services of the poet.
Writer Ghulam Rabbani Agro said it would take a lot of time to understand the poet fully.
Ghulam Akbar Leghari in his paper on the life and works of Shaikh Ayaz said the poetic works of the late Ayaz depicted different phases.
SAS secretary-general Taj Joyo stressed the need for teaching Sindhi language at private schools.
Imdad Hussaini, Inam Shaikh, Dr Mohammad Qasim Bughio, Prof Aijaz Qureshi, Arbab Naik Mohammad, Wali Ram Walabh and others also spoke on the occasion.
Earlier, a caravan of writers, led by Ibrahim Joyo, laid a Chadar on shrines of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai, Syed Habib Shah, Allama Daudpoto and Shaikh Ayaz in Bhitshah.
SCHOLARSHIP: Dadu District Nazim Malik Asad Sikandar has invited applications from students of the University of Sindh for grant of scholarship on poverty-cum-merit basis.
Application forms can be obtained from the office of the district office and the last date for submitting the forms has been fixed at Feb 28, 2004.
