KARACHI, Dec 29: An attempt to smuggle foreign liquor, worth millions of rupees, was foiled by the staff of Anti-smuggling wing of the Preventive Collectorate of Customs on Sunday night.

The seizure of 11,000 bottles was made on a tip off that the foreign liquor was being brought to Karachi in a boat for supply on the New Year eve.

Deputy Collector (Preventive), Headquarter, Basit Maqsood Abbasi, on Dec 25, set up a raiding party, which spotted the suspected launch near Pasni coast and started chasing it.

Sensing danger, the smugglers abandoned their launch in the sea and fled in an accompanying speed boat amidst cross fire.

The Customs party, during the search of the abandoned launch, found it laden with large number of cartons containing foreign liquor.

The anti-smuggling staff has, in a short span, seized huge quantity of betel-nuts, cigarettes and other contraband goods in 13 different cases, in which four trucks, one bus, two Suzuki vans and other vehicles, includ-

ing launches were impounded.—APP
