KARACHI: Labourer dies in wall collapse

KARACHI, Dec 29: A labourer died and his associate was injured when a wall fell on them during an anti-encroachment drive in F.B. Industrial Area on Monday.

Police said that encroachment was being removed from the Block-21 of F.B. Industrial Area when a wall fell on Rajpar and Gul Zareen. As a result, Rajpar died on the spot while Gul Zareen was injured. Both were taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.

The encroachment was being removed for the construction of Lyari Expressway, police added.

ARRESTED: A son of a high court judge was arrested red-handed for snatching a mobile phone set in Clifton on Monday.

An unlicensed TT pistol and the snatched phone set were recovered from his possession and a case was registered at the Boating Basin police station, the police said.

According to the FIR (234/03), complainant Hafeez Dad stated that a man came to his shop, Classic Mobile World, in Hashoo Terrace, and asked for a specific set. He was shown the set and told its price as Rs25,000. He took out a pistol and threatening to open fire ran away. The shopkeeper raised alarm and ran after him. Other shopkeepers also chased the man, who fired shots in the air.

Two policemen on a motorcycle stopped the man and took him to the Boating Basin police station, where he was identified as Zahib Jamali. The father of the suspect is stated to be a sitting judge of the Sindh High Court while his mother is an additional secretary in the law department.

Another complainant, Waseem Omar, who owned a shop Rafey Communications near Classic Mobile, later reached the police station and identified Zahib. He accused Zahib of snatching two mobile phone sets at gunpoint from his shop on Dec 24. Police also registered FIR (236/03) under section 392 of the PPC against Zahib in this respect. Another FIR (235/03) against Zahib for allegedly keeping an unlicensed pistol was also lodged.
