Spain names strong squad for Azlan Shah Cup

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 27: Spain have named a team capable of turning tables on the favourites for Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey Cup at Kuala Lumpur from Jan 8-18.

They have 13 players who were members of side that lifted Champions Challenge title last July.

In Eduard Tubau, they have a goalscoring forward who can turn most games and with support of Pol Amat and Juan Escarre, it is a formidable line-up.

He made his debut for Spain in 1999 Champions Trophy in Berlin.

There is also deadly combination of Xavier Ribas and Santi Freixa for penalty corner situations.

Freixa has scored in every match during Spain’s march in recent European Cup tournament last September.

They also have a master tactician in coach Maurits Hendriks, who led his native Holland to gold medal at Sydney Olympics in 2000.

Squad: Ingacio Alborch Simo, Eduardo Aguilar Estrada, Ramon Alegre Biosca, Pol Amat Escude, Juan Escarre Uruena, Alberto Esteban Velaquez, Alex Fabregas Carne, Francisco Fabregas Monegal, Santiago Freixa Escude, Bernardino Herrera Casanueva, Xavier Ribas Centelles, Victor Sojo Gimenez, Eduard Tubau Cutal, Javier Bruses Manresa, Marc Garcia Cascon, Jaime Perez Lacada, Albert Sala Moreno, David Alegre Biosca. Coach: Maurits Hendriks. Manager: Jordi Olivia. —PPI
