KARACHI, Dec 26: The thoroughbred bay horse Charkh Bareen an offspring of Tanuf-Willing Shoes outpaced Hoor-e-Mehran to lift Quaid-i-Azam Gold Cup at the Karachi Racecourse on Thursday.
Owned by Yahya Shahid and ridden by Salahuddin the winner lay in the bunch when the gruelling 12 furlong journey began, with the favourite Lady’s Love jumping off ahead of the other 13 runners followed by Lover’s Lady, Love U Lady, Hoor-e-Rehman and Steal The Show. Soon Lover’s Lady took over the running followed by Love U Lady, as Lady’s Love fell back and was lying ninth passing the one mile marker.
Nearing the six furlong marker Hoor-e-Mehran was running neck and neck with Steal The Show as Charkh Bareen moved into fourth spot, with Lady’s Love making hardly any attempt to improve on her position.
About 200 yards from the winning post Hoor-e-Mehran shot into the lead and just when it seemed that dark bay filly had bagged the gold cup, Charkh Bareen with an astonishing burst of speed outpaced the front runner at the winning post. Steal The Show was third, while Lady’s Love was fourth.
The fastest three-year-old in Pakistan, Blue’s Traveller after two disappointing performances here, won 2000 Guineas of Pakistan by sprinting to victory over the mile, with champion jockey Shahid Rehman in the saddle.
Blue’s Traveller shot out like a bullet when heads turned for home and raced to victory with plenty to spare, followed by Captain Crash.
Keen Winner, a bay colt that beat Blue’s Traveller in their last engagement was third with Perfect Smile completing the frame.
The Nursery Cup was picked up by two-year-old chestnut colt Dil Phaink with Sher Mohammad astride, followed home by Black Pearl. Hunter Valley and Nice Dream completed the frame.
Tashseen Hussain replaced Abdul Aziz in the saddle on Trillion Winner, and the dark bay colt galloped to victory over the six furlongs and won the Christmas Cup in a start to finish bid, with Your Honour finishing second two lengths behind, followed by Micky Mikado II and Roberto Carlos Fan.
The Momika Cup was the final trophy up for grabs and was won by bay filly Don’t Panic ridden by Sher Mohammad, beating Edging Ahead, with Yaqoob Choice and Donatello completing the frame.
But the gentleman that stole the racing limelight on Thursday was none other than Syed Ali Gohar Shah, who along with teenage rider Naveed and trainer Talib Hussain finished with a marvellous treble. Their first winner came through outsider Royal Lancer in the opener, beating Sea Biscuit by two lengths with the favourite Choti Moti third and Sajan Black completing the frame.
The next winner came in the following event, when another outsider Silver City obliged the trio, beating Falcon by three lengths, followed by the favourite Not To Worry and Xtasy.
The hat trick was completed in the fourth event, after Ceaser’s Palace beat Lovely Concept and Champion Lady.
Outsider Snake River picked up the spoils in the sixth event. Ridden by Abdul Aziz, the bay colt beat Midnight Madness with Thousand Up finishing second.
The next racing is schedule for Wednesday, Dec 31.
