FAISALABAD, Dec 24: District Nazim Zahid Nazir has said that the elected representatives have promised full support to the project of installation of 22 tubewells along the Jhang branch canal for supply of sweet water to the city.

He told newsmen here on Wednesday that he had held meetings with MNAs, MPAs, Nazims and Naib Nazims of union councils of villages along the canal on the issue. They promised maximum support to the Wasa staff to complete the task.

The Faisalabad Greater Water Supply Project was started with the financial assistance of a Japanese firm, JICA, in 1998. Wasa and other agencies concerned selected the banks of river Chenab in Chiniot tehsil to install tubewells for pumping out sweet water. The area people protested against the project claiming that the underground water level would fall due to installation of heavy capacity tubewells. Protest by people of Chiniot forced the government to find alternative site.

Wasa selected the Jhang branch canal for the purpose. The people of these areas also protested due to which the JICA suspended its work.

DEMO: Hundreds of students of the National Textile University on Wednesday demonstrated in front of offices of an APTMA member in protest against increase in a number of seats and introduction of self-finance scheme by the University management.

The protesting students gathered in the university and held a protest meeting. They locked all the university’s gates to stop the scheduled meeting of members of the Board of Governors. They also chanted slogans in favour of their demands.

When they knew that the site for the BoG meeting had been changed and now it was in progress in offices of an APTMA member at Nishatabad, some three kilometres from the university, the students took out the demonstration there by carrying banners and placards.

They also chanted slogans against the NTU management and demanded immediate action from President Pervez Musharraf.
