KARACHI: Colony without basic facilities

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Dec 21: Availability of basic facilities is still a most urgent problem in Keamari Town’s Mohammadi Colony, a most backward area which has been a victim of neglect for years.

The residents have urged the government to direct the agencies concerned to take effective measures for providing basic facilities to them.

The colony, formerly known as Machhar Colony, is without proper water supply and drainage system, despite the fact that it is located near the Wazir Mansion railways station and is divided by a storm-drain, covered by polythene bags.

Filth and dirt can be seen in every street of the locality as there is no system for dumping of garbage. A resident of the colony told this reporter that for years the area people had been urging the authorities to redress their grievances, but so far their efforts had not produced any results.

Area social worker, Samiul Haq, said they were exposed to serious health hazards owing to poor sanitary conditions.

Situated on the western side of the seashore near Mauripur Road (UC-5) of Keamari Town, the colony had started surfacing on the reclaimed land of KPT some time in 1970.

Although the locality is below the mean-sea level, the residents of the area have managed to construct internal streets and get installed pole-light and electric connections by raising the grounds.

Lack of civic facilities has been the main cause of miserable conditions of the locality, forcing a large number of people to live under subhuman conditions.

“The poor people of the colony are totally unaware of the risks of the horrendous life,” an NGO activist of the locality said, adding that it was the responsibility of the government and the civic agencies to save the people from any eventuality.
