DHA almost down and out

By Our Sports Reporter

KARACHI, Dec 16: Bangladesh ‘A’ batted and bowled themselves into a winning position after reducing the hapless Defence Housing Authority (DHA) to 86 for five on the second day of Patron’s Trophy match on Tuesday.

DHA’s plight might have been far more depressing had Sharjeel Ashraf (24) and fellow left-hander Rizwan Qureshi (25) not stopped the rot with the top five batsmen back in the hut for 39 runs.

The home side still requires 217 to avoid the humiliation of being asked to bat again.

Earlier, skipper, Mushfiqur Rahman, brought an end to the flogging DHA bowlers endured at the hands of the touring batsmen, notably Shahriar Hossain who made 218 in his team’s score of 452 for nine declared.

In hindsight, the Pakistan Cricket Board now must be ruing its decision to allow through back door a club-level outfit like DHA competing at this stage. Despite the shoddy standard of first-class cricket in this country, the departmental tournament still offers a ray of hope for those on fringe of national honours.

In foresight, nobody really stands to benefit because of the disparity between the teams. But someone like Shahriar might put up on a different case since he is fighting to regain his place in the Test squad.

Shahriar duly completed a double century after starting the day on 176, and was sixth out at 404. The right-hander, whose long vigil at the crease lasted 11 minutes short of eight hours, sent the ball 36 times across the fence during his 352-ball innings.
