HYDERABAD: SU students demand fee increase withdrawal

Bureau Report

HYDERABAD, Dec 16: The Sindh University Students’ Action Committee has threatened that it will launch a protest movement if its 26-point charter of demands is not accepted by the university authorities.

Speaking at a news conference at the press club here on Tuesday, the office-bearers of the committee said the university fees had been increased by 150 per cent during the last two years and there was a shortage of buses for students.

They said no recreational programme had been held during the last five years and the students also faced the problem of shortage of hostel accommodation.

They regretted that the police had taken over the possession of the B- Block and four students instead of two were living in one hostel room.

The action committee leaders said if a student raised voice against the university administration, he was implicated in false cases and arrested.

They said some university officers were holding more than one posts and alleged the university degrees were being sold for Rs5,000 each.

They demanded that the 1998 fees structure should be restored, shortage of buses be eliminated, the transport officer and director of admissions be removed, police be ejected from the B-Block and students be provided with hostel accommodation.

They also demanded that students scholarships and quota for the interior of Sindh should be restored, self-financing scheme be abolished, ambulance and doctors be made available for boarders round the clock and shortage of books at department and central libraries be removed.

Their other demands included withdrawn of what they called false cases against students, elimination of corruption from the university and regularization of the contractual staff.

Those who spoke on the occasion included Mohammad Ali Mir Jat, Syed Mehran Shah, Naeem Lashari, Lal Nawab Khan Soomro and Ghulam Ali Bhutto.

The SU students action committee is a conglomerate of Sindh People’s Students’ Federation, SPSF-SB, Jeay Sindh Students’ Federation, Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Students’ Federation and Sindh National Students Federation.
