LAHORE, Dec 15: The human rights committee of the Lahore High Court Bar Association has announced a demonstration for Wednesday against the abduction of two nuclear scientists of the Kahuta Research Laboratories (KRL) —- Dr Yasin Chohan and Dr Farooq Ahmad.
The scientists went missing last week and one of them, Dr Farooq, returned home two days back but the whereabouts of the other scientist were still not known.
LHCBA president Hafiz Abdur Rehman Ansari said on Monday that the motive behind the picking up of the two KRL scientists was shrouded in mystery and this created doubts in the minds of the people about the government policy on the nuclear programme and officials associated with that.
Mr Ansari said that there was no doubt in it that the scientists detention was illegal. But more than that the involvement of foreign agencies in the abduction was highly disturbing.
The LHCBA is also holding a reference for the late president of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal Maulana Shah Ahmad Noorani on Tuesday.
SBP: The Lahore High Court on Monday allowed the federal government the last chance to clarify its position on a State Bank of Pakistan circular issued about two months back making it mandatory for the commercial banks to furnish details of account holders who have a deposit of Rs10,000 or more.
Advocate M.D.Tahir has challenged the SBP circular on the ground that it violates the fundamental rights and a sacred trust between a bank and its account holders.
In a petition, he has expressed his fear that the country’s economy would suffer badly and virtually all account holders would be put to embarrassment because of this government policy which would also undermine the credibility of the State Bank.
A deputy attorney-general sought on Monday more time for a reply.
The court allowed the state to file reply by Tuesday when the petition will be taken up again.
