KARACHI, Dec 14: M. Pervaiz moved closer to achieving his dream of becoming the champion trainer of 2003, when he saddled home a splendid treble at the Winter Gymkhana Meeting held on Sunday at the Karachi Racecourse.
Leading from the start when the season began, Pervaiz was moving along merrily towards his goal, until Moheyuddin with a late burst was breathing down his neck in the later stages with 32 winners.
However with Sunday’s treble, Pervaiz has forged ahead with 41 winners and with only three more race days for the season to end, it seems highly impossible if Pervaiz can be caught up by the rest of the field.
Lying third on the list is Talib Hussain (21), Iftikhar Ali (19), former champion trainer Mansoor Alam, Mumtaz Ali and another former champion Taj Mohammad with 16 winners apiece. Pervaiz began by grabbing the first winner in the third race, where the two year-old bay colt Al Asif ridden by Zahoor Ahmed came in with a flying burst to edge out Fantastic Love by half a length.
Victory number two was achieved in the sixth race, when M.R. Murtaza’s bay horse Edging Ahead partnered by Tariq Mahmood, galloped to victory over the six furlong journey in a start to finish bid, leaving Don’t Panic, Captain Crash and Sardar in his wake.
The treble was achieved in the concluding race on the afternoon’s programme, when the bay horse Khas Ul Khas made in two winners on the trot for owner Rahat Sultan, with fine horsemanship from M. Nasir in the saddle, to end the pretensions of Visitor and Sweet Touch.
The first race on the card was won by our column fancy Lovely Concept, sprinting to victory over five furlongs under riding boy M. Manzoor, chased all the way past the winning post by War Lord, Smokey Prince and X’tasy.
Ring Master with riding boy Sheraz Ahmed astride, beat Sonia by 1 1/2 lengths in the next event after the two were engaged in a neck and neck tussle in the home stretch.
Surprisingly the fourth event was cancelled after the Racing Administration found out that only three runners Thousand Up, Neelam Taab and Nawab, all from Moheyuddin’s stable were ticking. The rest of the field were stone cold.
This was indeed a great drawback for the young trainer. Naturally Moheyuddin would try all his runners in that race since he too is vying for the top honours in the trainers championship. In fact the other runners in that race should have been penalised.
Yaqoob Choice piloted once again by jockey Shahid Mannan, won a very interesting race in the fifth, making it two winners in a row for owner Edward Chou and ending the winning spree of Your Opinion, going all out of registering his fourth victory in a row.
The next race meeting is schedule for Thursday, Dec 18.
