Pakistan St Leger feature event of the day

By Aftab Gilani

LAHORE, Dec 11: A card of six events featuring the Pakistan St Leger and five cup races highlights the splendour of a special day racing to be held at the Racecourse on Friday.

Besides the St Leger, there are five cup events including four named after the participating countries in the 7th Federation of International Polo (FIP) Play-off 2003 being staged first time in Pakistan at Lahore.

The countries are: Australia, Iran, India and Singapore.

Excitement and sentiments blend superbly for the epic occasion for the equestrian sport in the history of Lahore upstaging the events which add spice to Lahore Race Club’s already brilliant winter meetings in progress.

The Pakistan St. Leger is being run on the pattern of English St. Leger, an annual horse race at Doncaster racecourse and is a term race for four-year-old colts and fillies. Only seven thoroughbred colts and fillies have accepted for the big event to be contested over 2000 metres. Of them chance one are: Tora Bora, Royal Falcon and The Conqueror, who should fight it out. This will be the fifth race of the day.

The supporting event, the Australia Cup to be run over a mile will be contested by nine contenders barring last-minute withdrawals.

The main focus among the runners will be on three imported fillies, namely, Laser Lass, Aegean Daisy and Pretty Pekan. Only they appeared to be real genuine chances for the cup, which is being billed as the filly of the year contest.

Laser Lass (Ali Royal-Lingdale Lass) is from the lineage of Royal Academy, Nijinsky and Northern Dancer and had performed very fine.

Aegean Daisy is the daughter of Ball Harbour out-of-Dizzy Day and has shown equally good spark.

Pretty Pekan is the daughter of Sri Pekan out-of-Pretty Precedent. Sri Pekan (Red Ranson) is the well-known English sire of the 2001 and 2002 and his progenies have fared very well in prize-money winning in Europe. According to statics released by the Hyperion Promotion Limited Sri Pekan’s progenies fared better than those of Ali Royal (Royal Academy), Eagle Eyed (Danzig), Dane Hill (Danzig), Key Of Luck (Chief’s Crown) and Barathea (Sadler’s Wells) etc on European race tracks.

Which way the race will go is anybody’s guess and opinions may differ but the fact remains that the race-goers will be watching blue-blood thoroughbreds jostle for supremacy. The handicap goes in favour of Pretty Pekan.

Chestnut English filly, Dancing Key, a daughter of Halling out-of-Feet Key seems a cut above in class vis-a-vis her nine rivals in the Iran Cup to have gone over the distance of 1600 metres. Halling is one of the outstanding sons of Deisis from the lineage of Sharpen Up and Atan. Halling’s progenies have won races in Italy and Japan. She should be followed by Snow Drop and Song Of Peace.

The first race will be held at 12.30pm.
