DPs to be relocated

Bureau Report

PESHAWAR, Dec 11: The United Nations High Commission for Refugees will relocate about 10,000 Afghan refugees from Shalman camp, Kyhber Agency, to other camps in Pakistan.

The world body will begin its operation from March 2004.

A press release issued here on Wednesday evening said the refugees would be offered the choice to go back under the voluntary repatriation programme or relocate to existing Kotkai, Barkali camps (Bajaur Agency) or Asgharo camp in Kurram Agency. These camps are holding 23,500 refugee population.

The reasons cited for the relocation of refugees from the camp are non-availability of drinking water and difficulty in providing humanitarian assistance.

The UN agency has also offered transportation facilities to the refugees.
