‘Terrorism claimed 537 lives in 3 years’

ISLAMABAD, Dec 11: As many as 537 persons were killed in terrorist-related incidents during the past three years ending Sept 15, 2003, the Senate was informed here on Wednesday during the question-hour.

The Senate was also informed about the loss of life and property in the incidents of terrorism and sectarianism in the country between January 2002 and July 2003.

According to the break-up provided in this regard, 202 persons were killed during the same period while a church was damaged in Islamabad, 123 vehicles, 11 shops, five buildings and two petrol pumps were damaged in Sindh while in Balochistan, the casualty centre of the Civil Hospital Quetta and few business premises were damaged. Window panes of Muslim Commercial Bank, Al Habib Bank, United Bank Limited, PICIC Commercial Bank, Habib Bank, Soneri Bank and Allied Bank were also smashed.

The upper house of parliament was also told that five culprits — Shamim Ahmad, Mohammad Jan, Mohammad Qasim, Daud Badin and Usman Saifullah — involved in the terrorist act of July 4, 2003 in Quetta, have been identified.
