KASUR, Dec 9: Driven by the potato crisis and poor wheat crop earlier this year and delay in cane crushing, farmers are reaping a gloomy winter.
The farm sector crisis in Kasur district, known for potato crop, is so serious this time that even big landlords are facing the financial crunch. And for those who have to repay farm loans “it is almost end of the world.”
According to the Kasur Anjuman-i-Kashtkaran, farmers incurred Rs25,000 per acre on producing potato earlier this year but could not get more than Rs15,000 on their harvest (from an acre).
Those who stored their yield in cold storages sustained more losses as the price did not rise enough to meet their production and storage cost.
Anjuman officer-bearers warned of food shortage in the country, saying “how long a starving farmer can sustain farming?”
MARRIAGE ORD: The district government has completely failed to implement laws banning wasteful expenses on marriages.
Marriage halls and other buildings are illuminated. Elected public representatives, police and administrative officers, and nazims are seen attending marriages where lavish meals are served in violation of the rules.
