PESHAWAR, Dec 8: Eight qualifiers moved into the main round to make a draw of 32 players in the men’s singles on Monday in the 24th edition of the Chief of Air Staff Khyber Cup Open Tennis Championship, which got under way here at PAF Officer’s Mess green Courts.
The prestigious event of the Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) annual calender carrying a cash prize money of Rs. 120,000 attracts top players from all over the country.
A total of 120 participants have confirmed their participation in the following categories like Under-14, Union Under-18, men’s singles, men’s doubles and veterans doubles.
Prominent among the top players taking part in the Championship are Pakistan No. 1 Aqeel Khan, who has been placed as top seed, second seed and former Pakistan No.1 Asim Shafiq, national team coach Rashid Malik, Kamran Khalil, Ikram-ul-Haq, Saeed-ul-Haq, Azeem Khan, Wasif Cheema, Munir Ashiq, Tanveer Ashiq, Khurram Nazir, Sheryar Niazi, Shahrukh Niazi.
The names of the eight qualifiers are as under; Ikram Ullah Haq (Rawalpindi), Iftikhar (Police), Ghulam Rasool (NDC), Inam Gul (Police), Jehangir Khan, Iqbal Khan, Aman Ullah and Omer Ayaz (Police).
In the Under-18 category, Bashir Ullah, Ayaz Khan, Arshad Khan, Saad Mubarak and Imran Maqbool took berth into the main round to make it a draw of 16.
While in the Under-14 two qualifiers have yet to be moved to main round of 16.
Earlier, in the main round qualifying matches Ghulam Rasool beat Roman Gul, Iftikhar beat Farman, Umer Qayyum defeated Muhammad Sher, Umar Ayaz beat Dr. Shahzad, Adnan Wasim beat Murtaza and Israr Gul beat Tanveer as all the matches decided on Pro-set rules.
While in the Under-18 qualifier, Bashir defeated Suleman Arshad, Ayaz Khan beat Shaheen, Arshad beat Habib Hasan, Saad and Mubarak beat Abdul Shakoor.
In the Under-14 main round matches Nouman Khan beat Laiqat by 6-0 and 6-0, Hidayat outclassed Rehman Ullah 6-2 and 6-1, Ejaz Ahmed beat Kashif Khan by 5-7 (6-6), 6-4 and 6-1.—APP
