Naveed, Tariq put Wapda on top

Published December 9, 2003

KARACHI, Dec 8: Wapda wrested early initiative in their Patron’s Trophy Pool ‘A’ tie against KRL at National Stadium on Monday, with Rana Naveed-ul-Hasan and Tariq Aziz making notable contributions.

The toss, always a key factor at this time of the year, decided KRL’s fate because Wapda captain Zahid Umar had no hesitation in inviting them to bat first.

The presence of heavy moisture on a green-tinged pitch did the rest. Using the conditions to his advantage, paceman Rana Naveed, another Pakistan discard, snapped up six for 38 as KRL were skittled out for 124 in their first innings which lasted only 39.3 overs.

Tariq then capped an excellent day for Wapda with a scintillating undefeated 114. The 31-year-old right-hander struck 16 fours and a brace of sixes from his blazing blade.

Left-handed opener Adil Nisar, who hit four boundaries in making 37, played second fiddle to Tariq while putting on 103 for the second wicket in only 78 minutes. Shoaib Khan (24) then joined Tariq in another productive stand worth 73 so far.

Play ended eight overs before the schedule because of poor light. Wapda that point were 182 for two, already 68 runs in front.
