KRL too good for hapless Wapda

By Our Sports Reporter

KARACHI, Dec 7: Wapda were taught a harsh lesson on Sunday when they plummeted to an embarrassing 114-run defeat against Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) in the Patron’s Cup one-day encounter on a flat National Stadium pitch.

Wapda never recovered after KRL’s opening bowlers, Jaffar Nazir and Yasir Arafat, reduced them to 26 for five in the 13th over. They were finally dismissed for a paltry 87 in 29.2 overs.

Yasir, the wrecker-in-chief, triggered the slide with three early wickets before returning late in the innings to finish with four for 25. Jaffar captured two for 17 in 10 overs and Faisal Afridi three for 24 in five.

Earlier in the day, KRL found the going hard after being put into bat. They lost the first four wickets for 14 runs as Rana Naveed-ul-Hasan, the Wapda captain, utilized the moisture underneath the surface to full effect.

The pacer took three wickets in his opening burst before Intikhab Alam (44) and Asif Mahmood (35) came to KRL’s rescue by putting on 63 for the fifth wicket, the highest partnership of the match.

Later, handy contributions by Zulfiqar Jan, the tall wicket-keeper who made a gutsy 30 not out, and Jaffar Nazir (22) enabled KRL reach a respectable 201 for eight in their 50 overs.

Rana Naveed, yet another player rejected by the national selectors, broke through by having Jaffar caught by Adil Nisar. The eight-wicket stand was worth 41. Faisal Afridi also chipped in with 18 in the unfinished partnership of 36 with Zulfiqar.
