KARACHI: Prevalence of diabetes rising fast

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Dec 4: If the current trends are not reversed soon, Pakistan will have 15 million diabetics by the year 2025, according to a World Health Report. A major contributing factor in the rising prevalence of diabetes is lack of physical activity.

This year to discuss various issues in diabetes, the Diabetic Association of Pakistan and WHO Collaborating Centre, Karachi, are jointly organizing a symposium on Sunday, which has been designated here as the World Diabetes Day: 2003.

Dr S. Adibul Hasan Rizvi will speak on issues in renal transplantation during the scientific sessions of the symposium, to be held on Sunday morning. Dr A. Samad Shera, Dr S.A. Jafar Naqvi and Obaid Hashmi will also speak.

Meanwhile, in the afternoon an open session will be organized which will be presided over by Illahi Bukhsh Soomro, patron of the association. This will be an interactive session at which people will be able to put questions to experts.
