KARACHI: KU unable to find replacement of controller

KARACHI, Dec 3: University of Karachi is facing a great difficulty in finding an “honest and competent” person to replace its present controller of examinations who has been declared incompetent by the Sindh governor’s inspection, inquiry and implementation team.

KU controller of examinations, Inkesarul Haq, was held responsible for administrative embezzlements by the team investigating the role of KU officials in 53 illegal admissions to the Sindh Medical College (SMC) Karachi and recommended for immediate removal of the controller from his post.

A senior KU official informed PPI on Wednesday that the controller had miserably failed to manage B.Com, B. A and B.Sc exams commencing from Dec 6, or he was deliberately creating chaos in degree exams which had been held in an organised and smooth way for the past many years.

“He has been repeatedly shifting the centres and timings of all the three exams without any reason and now KU has spent a huge amount on ads to inform students about the schedule”, he said and added that controller had also accepted 130 exam forms after the expiry of the forms submission date without any authority.

He further said that the university had published advertisements in local Urdu and English dailies to recruit an experienced and competent person as controller of exams a few months back but nobody turned out to be the right candidate for the slot. “Some competent and honest KU faculty members were also asked by the administration to accept the post but they refused”, he added.

The KU official said that earlier the KU exams department used to spend Rs4.5 million on furniture and tents, but now a committee set up by the vice-chancellor identified departments with enough furniture to accommodate all candidates appearing in degree exams. “This way the KU saves Rs4.5 million earlier used to spend on arrangements”.

Giving details of the other developments at the campus, he said a KU probe committee had found four KU exam and enrolment officials involved in illegal admissions at the SMC and had recommended registration of criminal cases against them.

These four officials were earlier suspended and sent on forced leave by the administration after the governor’s team recommended action against them.

Date extended: University of Karachi has extended the date for admission for degree classes up to December 5 for those candidates declared successful by the Board of Intermediate Karachi after grant of grace marks.

A spokesman for the university said on Wednesday that the date had been extended for those candidates who attained eligibility for admissions to B.Com., B.Sc,. B.A. and B. Pharmacy.

However, he said that such students would have to appear in the aptitude test following submission of the forms. Interviews of the candidates who qualify the test would be held after December 15, it was further pointed out.
