Flaws in KUBS admissions

KARACHI, Dec 2: Major flaws in the process of admissions to BBA (Hons) at Karachi University Business School have resulted in the postponement of interviews of candidates scheduled to be held on Dec 3, 4 and 5.

An official of the University of Karachi, requesting anonymity on Tuesday, said that the vice-chancellor had directed the postponement of interviews for admissions at KUBS before proceeding to the United States on a personal visit.

“Interviews would now be held on Dec 15 and 16, and the vice- chancellor would interview the candidates along with KU Registrar and senior KUBS officials,” he said.

The official said that several students had approached varsity administration alleging that they were asked for “financial benefits” in return of admissions to BBA (Hons) at the KUBS.

A large number of candidates had applied for admissions in the business degree programme, first time offered by any public sector university in Karachi. Around 104 candidates were short- listed by the KUBS administration after written test last month.

The university official said that the postponement of interviews was “part of KU drive against corruption and financial and administrative embezzlements” and added that anybody found involved in the heinous practice would have to face the consequences.

A KU inquiry commission, established through a notification on Tuesday, has been assigned to probe into the matter and report the outcome of its investigation to the VC after his arrival from the United States, he added.

The vice-chancellor has constituted a six-member commission to probe into irregularities, corruption, misappropriation, malfunctioning at various levels in various departments, sections, institutes and centres of the varsity.

According to a notification issued by KU Registrar on Tuesday, the commission is comprised of Prof Dr Mansoor Ahmed as its convener, the presidents of Karachi University Teachers’ Society, Officers’ Welfare Association and the Employees Welfare Association, Dr Hafiz Shakeel and Hina Khan as its members. — PPI
