Dr Hamza Alavi dies

KARACHI, Dec 1: Renowned scholar Dr Hamza Alavi died here on Monday afternoon after a protracted illness. He was 82.
He leaves a brother and two sisters. His wife had died a long time ago.
Mr Alavi suffered a massive brain haemorrhage on Sept 23. His family took him to the Liaquat National Hospital where he remained under treatment for a couple of weeks. Though he returned home later, he never fully recuperated.
He was buried at Noor Bagh Bohra graveyard near Mewashah on Monday evening. Soyem will be held at Yousufi Masjid in Shabbirabad off Tipu Sultan Road on Wednesday at 9am.
Mr Alavi was born in Karachi on April 10, 1921. He studied at D.J. College and received a silver medal for logic and philosophy. He then attended Wadia College at Poona (Bombay University). He obtained an MA in Economics from Aligarh Muslim University and did his PhD from the Gokhale Institute in Poona.
He started his career as research officer at the Reserve Bank of India, central office, Bombay. He also taught full time and worked as visiting professor at various universities and institutes, including the Centre for Social Theory and Comparative History, University of California, Los Angeles; GSIS, University of Denver; Institute of Development Studies at University of Sussex; University of Manchester; University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur; University of Leeds; and Centre for South Asian Studies, Michigan State University.
