LAHORE, Dec 1: Devastating bowling by paceman Mohammad Sami fired Pakistan to 124-run win against hapless New Zealand in the second one-dayer and take 2-0 lead in the five match series at Gaddafi Stadium on Monday.
Sami with his blistering pace grabbed the last five wickets off only 11 balls in which he conceded two runs as the Black Caps collapsed from 155 for five wickets to 157 all out in 38.5 overs while chasing Pakistan’s imposing 281 for six wickets.
Sami was on a hat trick by removing Jacob Oram and Tama Canning on the first two balls of the 37th over. Daniel Vettori averted the hat trick. However, Vettori fell on the second last ball of the same over when he was caught by Imran Farhat at cover.
The collapse started when the Kiwi’s top-scorer opener Richard Jones was clean bowled by off-spinner Shoaib Malik for 63 at the total of 155 off the last ball of the 36th over.
Kiwi skipper Chris Cairns (29, three fours, 42 balls), who punished the Pakistani bowlers in the first match by scoring 84, was run out when Imran’s throw from mid-wicket went straight into the hands of Shoaib.
Jones defied Pakistani bowlers with a patient 110-ball knock hitting five fours and one six.
Sami finished with five for 10 in 7.5 overs and was adjudged Man-of-the-Match.
Earlier, Pakistan stand-in-captain Yousaf Youhana won the toss and elected to bat under ideal batting conditions.
Three half-centuries by top-scorer Saleem Elahi (70), Imran Farhat (68), Yasir Hameed (53) and another breezy 16-ball 42 knock of Abdul Razzzaq helped Pakistan pile up 281 for six in 50 overs.
Openers Imran and Yasir provided a solid start of 115 in 24 overs after each getting a chance in early stages of the innings. Yasir who scored 53 got a life when he was at 23. Oram failed to hold a return catch. Imran was dropped in the first slip by Canning off Tuffey when he was on three.
But both capitalised on the chances. Yasir completed his 50 by hitting Vettori for a boundary. He struck five boundaries and faced 74 balls.
Imran, who had failed in the first match, came good this time scoring 68. He slammed eight fours and one six in 88 balls.
Saleem, who was included in place of captain Inzamam-ul-Haq who was unwell, further consolidated Pakistan innings by hitting a polished 70 off 69 balls with six fours.
Inzamam was victim of throat infection which kept him out of the match and denied him a chance to complete his 300th ODIs.
Saleem featured in two productive partnerships. He put on 50 runs off 33 balls with Shoaib Malik. Later, Saleem and Abdul Razzaq plundered 45 runs off 25 balls.
