KARACHI: Anti-dam protest

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Nov 30: Activists of the Jeay Sindh Mahaz (JSM) staged a protest demonstration outside the residences of Senator Nisar Ahmed Memon, Chairman of the Water Committee, and Sardar Khalid Lund, a federal minister, here on Sunday.

The JSM workers, led by Agha Qamar and Riaz Chandio, travelled to the residences of the Senator and minister in a convoy of buses. They staged a sit-in and raised slogans against Kalabagh Dam and Thal Canal projects.

As a symbol of protest, the activists hanged black Tawwa (a pan meant for baking bread) onto the main gate of Mr Memon’s house in Defence. They also resorted to spread graffiti on the gates in presence of the security guards and Rangers who tried to prevent photographers from taking snaps of the event.

Mr Nisar Memon, a former federal minister, came out of his house after hearing the noise and told the protesters that his residence was not the right place to stage a protest as it was not a place for politics. He advised them to register their protest at the PML House in KDA Scheme 1.

Afterwards, the activists travelled to Maqboolabad and staged a similar protest outside the house of Mr Khalid Lund, who was not at home at that time. Later, the protesters dispersed peacefully.
