KARACHI: JI renews threat to launch movement

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Nov 30: Jamaat-i-Islami has reiterated its stand that if the government failed to table the agreed constitutional package in the National Assembly by Dec 17, a mass protest movement would be launched from Dec 18.

JI Secretary-General Syed Munawwar Hasan, speaking at an Eid Milan party at the party office on Sunday said that the government could avoid the protest movement only if Gen Pervez Musharraf transferred powers to the civilian government.

Recalling that there was no output of 13-month long negotiations between the MMA and the government, he said the real issue was not the uniform of president, but it was transfer of power to the civilian government.

He said that the purpose of launching the movement was not to create anarchy or confrontation with the army, but to hold meaningful talks with the authorities.

Mumtaz Ali Memon, JI Sindh chief, said that formation of the MMA turned out to be a blessing for Sindhi people, who had forgotten mutual bickerings and soon the JI would be able to get a break through in the province.

Dr Mairajul Huda Siddiqui, JI Karachi chief, said that the need of the hour was to strengthen our association with Islamic movements and intensify our struggle for Islamic renaissance.
