Razzaq propels Pakistan to exciting victory

By Mohammad Yaqoob

LAHORE, Nov 29: A hurricane 22-ball 47 by all-rounder and Man-of-the-Match Abdul Razzaq and his unbroken eighth-wicket stand with Mohammad Sami (17) of 65 runs off 24 balls helped Pakistan to snatch a dramatic three-wicket win over New Zealand at Gaddafi Stadium on Saturday.

Chasing a formidable target of 292 for win, Pakistan had lost all its recognised batsmen at the total of 227 for seven wickets with only six overs remaining.

But Razzaq and Sami achieved the stiff target of remaining 65 runs —- a run rate of 10.5, with ease as Pakistan romped home scoring 292 with two overs to spare.

Razzaq cracked two sixes and three boundaries while Sami smashed two sixes off eight balls he faced.

The pair took 46 runs in the last three overs. Sami surprised every one when he lofted paceman Kerry Walmsley in  the 46th  over for a six at long-on.

Maintaining the hectic tempo the aggressive pair scored 18 runs in the next over bowled by Michael Mason including Sami’s second six and a boundary from Razzaq.

Skipper and all-rounder Chris Cairns came to bowl the next over which sealed the fate of the match as Pakistani pair plundered 16 runs to complete victory.

Pakistan after a bad start losing opener Imran Farhat for a duck at the total of 2 were served well by his partner Yasir Hameed (52, seven fours, 73 balls), and middle-order. Captain Inzamam-ul-Haq (49, four fours, one six, 63 balls),  Moin Khan (43, three fours, one six, 47 balls) and Yousaf Youhana (42, five fours, 40 balls) set the stage for the eight-wicket pair to complete the mission.

Yasir and Youhana’s second wicket stand yielded 90 runs to take the total to 92. But both were removed within a space of three runs. Yasir was caught by Mathew Sinclair off medium-pacer Jacob Oram at cover and Youhana was run out while going for a sharp single at the total of 95.

But Inzamam and Moin steadied the innings with their  fourth wicket stand worth 99 runs to make the total 194 by 37th over. Once again Pakistan lost two quick wickets when Inzamam and Moin went out one after the other for the addition of two runs. Inzamam was adjudged lbw and Moin trying was caught by wicket-keeper Brendon McCullum off Daniel Vettori at the total of 196.

Shoaib Malik (9) and Misbah-ul-Haq (21, one six, one four, 17 balls) also lost their wickets in quest for quick runs as Pakistan slipped to 227 for seven.

Earlier batting first after winning the toss. Cairns’s explosive unbeaten knock of 84 off 51 balls ensured New Zealand post their highest-ever total against Pakistan of 291 for five in 50 overs. Six sixes and five boundaries speak itself what Cairns did with Pakistani bowlers in the slog overs. The previous highest was 290 for six scored at Dunedin on Feb 28, 2001.

Cairns  with  Oram collected 90 runs off 60 balls in their fifth wicket partnership. The Kiwis scored 112 runs in the  last 10 overs and 73 in the last five.

Cairns was ruthless when he completed hat trick of sixes off leg-spinner Danish Kaneria’s last over hammering 22 runs.

Oram, who had hit one six at mid-wicket to Sami in the  49th over,  finally  caught at mid-on by Misbah-ul-Haq off  the  first ball  of 50th over bowled by Razzaq. Oram scored 35 runs  off  31 balls with three boundaries and one six.

Only paceman Shabbir Ahmed bowled economically conceding just 30 runs for two wickets in 10 overs. Kaneira was the most expensive giving away 76 runs.
