Ban on Indian cricketer reinstated

NEW DELHI, Nov 29: The cash-to-play scandal in Indian cricket took another twist on Saturday when a higher court reimposed the ban on Abhijit Kale, the player charged with offering bribes to two national selectors.

Following an appeal by the Indian board, the district sessions court in the western city of Pune stayed a lower court’s ruling on Friday which allowed Kale to resume his career, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.

The lower court on Friday had upheld Kale’s appeal challenging the decision of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to temporarily suspend him until a corruption inquiry was over.

The board last week banned Kale after allegations by selectors Kiran More and Pronob Roy that he had offered them bribes to be picked for the current tour of Australia.

The selectors, both former internationals, alleged in writing to board chief Jagmohan Dalmiya that Kale offered them a million rupees (US$22,000) each to be selected.

The board will discuss the bribery allegations at a special meeting here on Sunday.

“The meeting will discuss all aspects of the issue involving Kale,” board secretary Karunakaran Nair said.

Kale and the selectors also appeared on Saturday before the board’s inquiry commissioner D.V. Subba Rao in the southern city of Visakhapatnam.—AFP
