High Standard tipped to grab Eid Cup

By Ian Fyfe

KARACHI, Nov 25: Thoroughbred chestnut filly High Standard, after her amazing victory last time out, is fancied to lift the Eid Cup at the Winter Gymkhana Race Meeting to be held on Thursday at the Karachi Racecourse.

Trained by Tanveer Abbasi, the Strides By Strides - Tiny Tot sibling raised quite a few eyebrows when she sprinted to victory in the Nawroz Ali J. Bhamani Memorial Cup a month ago, beating her nearest rival Lover’s Lady by eight lengths going over six furlongs.

Another speedster Edging Ahead owned by M. R. Hussain and Visitor could pose problems for the chestnut filly, with Faisal Farooq’s chestnut colt Captain Crash supplying the element of surprise.

All in all seven events have been drawn up on the racing card. The first five will be contested over the sprinting distance of five furlongs and the last two will be run over six.

The first race begins at 12-30 p.m.

One more runner that should not lose on Sunday is the bay four-year-old colt Power Plus. Two weeks ago Power Plus ridden by Tahseen Hussain, lost a five furlong sprint to Gillespie by a neck, after the two runners had a stride-by-stride tussle when heads turned for home.

Power Plus should be followed home by Departure On Time and Shining Steel. However, danger lurks in the shadows of Neelam Taab.

Humayun Mirza’s dark bay gelding Sajan Black is our fancy to win the opener, chased all the way over the five furlongs by Silver City and Mark, with National Lining and Lucky Lover also having a say in the race.

The bay colt Your Opinion looks a good thing in the next event challenged by Royal Lancer and Bull Dancer, with Mera Jugnoo and Grey Boy joining the fray.

The third race of the afternoon is for two-year-old Pakistani thoroughbred and half-red colts and fillies all maidens at the time of starting.

In this race Fantastic Love, a bay colt is tipped to win from Ghabbar, with Oriental Express and Eager Again battling it out for the third spot.

Edward Chou’s dark bay three-year-old colt Trust You is on song for a hat trick in the next event, closely followed home by Gold Tip and Ring Master, with Sarazen and Nawab also making their presence felt.

Gillespie, the bay colt owned by Miss Shahzadi Erum won a magnificent race with Kashif Ali in the saddle and should triumph again from Your Honour, with Ranjha and Satellite Star battling it out for the third berth.
