Special police for Capital soon

By Our Staff Reporter

RAWALPINDI, Nov 24: The government has decided to form a special police force named as ‘Security Division’ for the protection of VVIPs and sensitive installations in Islamabad, official sources told Dawn on Monday.

In line with the directives of Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali to revamp the ICT police and form an ‘independent security system for the VVIPs’, two sub-committees were formed to review the needs and requirements of the new police force, if formed, the source said.

The ICT police chief had been directed to submit a complete report to the interior ministry by December 3 comprising suggestions of the senior police officials and the requirements of the new police force as that of Pakistan Motorway Police. The sources said Additional Inspector General (AIG) Rao Iqbal and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shahid Nadeem Baloch presented a comprehensive report to the secretary interior.

Earlier, a high level meeting was held at the interior ministry on October 30 to review the revamping of the ICT police, who drew fire for their failure in controlling rioting that erupted after the assassination of MNA Maulana Azam Tariq, the source said.
