KARACHI: KU withdraws faulty admission list

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Nov 24: After detection of some mistakes, the University of Karachi has withdrawn the merit list of 2,503 candidates seeking admissions in Masters classes for the academic session 2004, it is learnt officially. The list was issued on November 17.

The rectified list has now been posted at the university gate, said the director of the KU’s Admission Committee, Dr Mudassir Uddin. The previously issued list has been cancelled with vice chancellor’s consent and approval, he added.

The first provisional lists for admission to academic programmes in MA, MSc, MLIS and MCom had prompted complaints by students, particularly those anticipating admission to Biotechnology department but faced disappointment owing to some technical problem, said the KU official.

In the case of Biotechnology department, computers could pick up about nine names as against 50 allocated seats and that, too, not in the ‘K’ category, meant for Karachi based students. Following criticismand complaints, a detail scrutiny was carried out and it transpired that due to certain mistakes in the criteria for eligibility with regard to the admission to the Biotechnology department, which was also fed into the Admission Committee’s computers, a very little number of candidates were able to submit their applications.

The relevant prospectus carried the information that candidates having qualified BSc Pass (Medical Technology) with Biotechnology or Microbiology and with a minimum of 45 per cent marks from a recognized university were eligible to apply for the admission. The information should have been fed as “BSc Pass (Medical Technology) or Biochemistry or Microbiology and a minimum of 45 per cent aggregate marks from a recognized university.

After feeding the updated information into computers now, all the 50 seats allocated for admission to the Biotechnology department have been filled-in, but at the same time merit positions and names of candidates selected for some other departments have also changed.

The students enlisted for Biotechnology department in the second list were first selected for some other departments, the KU official said, maintaining that in the emerging situation, a reshuffling was in the offing and that was why a fresh list had been prepared and released.

He advised the students to note the changes accordingly. He said that period for depositing admission fee had already been notified, i.e. December 1 to 10, while the claim forms and objection on the new list would be accepted between December 1 and 6.
