HYDERABAD, Nov 22: Eight prisoners were released from the central jail here on Saturday after District Nazim Makhdoom Rafiquzzaman and a PPP leader paid fines imposed on them.

The prisoners told the Nazim during his visit to the jail that they had completed their term but could not be released due to non-payment of fine.

Mr Makhdoom paid the fine of seven prisoners, amounting to Rs32,000, while the fine of another prisoner amounting to Rs5,000, was paid by the People’s Party Parliamentarian leader Fateh Ali Talpur.

The prisoners were freed immediately and the district Nazim also gave them Eidi and fares.

The Makhdoom also distributed warm clothing among juvenile prisoners and met a delegation of foreign prisoners.

On the occasion, he was informed by the DIG prison that 37 women prisoners, belonging to the Hyderabad region and confined in the Karachi jail, would be shifted to the women jail after Eid-ul-Fitr.

DEMO: Workers of the National Biscuit Factory held a protest demonstration outside the press club here on Saturday against the non-payment of Eid bonus and leave encashment.

Leaders of the CBA union said the factory was earning huge profits but the management had refused to pay two months bonus and 32 days leave encashment which was paid on the first day of Ramazan.

They complained the workers were not registered with social security institutions and they were paid monthly wages between Rs1,500 to Rs1,800 against the statutory minimum wages of Rs2,500. They appealed to the higher authorities to direct the factory management to accept the charter of demands of the CBA.
